MAC is primarily a pulmonary pathogen that affects individuals who are immunocompromised. Mycobacterium avium is the isolate in more than 95% of patients with AIDS who develop MAC infections. In the United States, MAC infection is considered a non-reportable infectious disease. A 2011 CDC surveillance in Houston and Atlanta, reported an incidence of 1 case per 100,000 persons/yr. Song et al (2006) found approximately 24-59% of cases occurred in immunocompetent persons without predisposing factors.
