INTRODUCTION: Specimens from transbronchial lung biopsies (TBBx) lack sufficient quality due to crush artifact and size too small for diagnosis of diffuse lung diseases with complex histological patterns such as usual interstitial pneumonitis (UIP) or nonspecific interstitial pneumonitis (NSIP). Recent studies using the cryoprobe to obtain TBBx have shown sizes of specimens retrieved are significantly larger (43 mm2 vs. 5 mm2)1, crush artifacts were not seen and tissue architecture was well preserved.
