PURPOSE: Patients with chronic congestive heart failure (CHF) often present with pleural effusions causing dyspnea and worsening hypoxemia. Patients who fail medical therapy often need thoracentesis and recurrent admissions for symptom control. Use of indwelling pleural catheters (IPC) for malignant recurring effusions has been shown to improve quality of life; though there is limited data regarding its use in CHF. We evaluated management outcomes of pleural effusions secondary to CHF, refractory to optimal medical regimen; with either an IPC or serial thoracentesis
