SESSION TITLE: Tobacco Cessation and Prevention

SESSION TYPE: Original Investigation Poster

PRESENTED ON: Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM

PURPOSE: To design a questionnaire about tobacco control in the nursing students, and provide evidence for the nursing students’ tobacco control knowledge, beliefs and practices exploration

METHODS: On the basis of Health promotion theory model, a questionnaire about tobacco control was designed by literature review and expert consultation. There were eight dimensions in the questionnaire, including knowledge about harms of smoking, tobacco control attitudes, tobacco control laws and less harmful tobacco, trend toward smoking and tobacco control participation in society, information about media tobacco control perception, tobacco control participation in universities. With cluster sampling method, 5382 nursing students in two medical universities in Chongqing city filled in questionnaires. Some of 215 students were reinvestigated after two weeks. Reliability of the questionnaire was assessed by test-retest reliability and intramural consistency reliability. Validity of the questionnaire was detected by construct validity

RESULTS: Cronbach,s Alpha was 0.720, split-halfcoefficient was 0.806, Cronbach,s Alpha of eight dimensions was range from 0.529~0.748. Split-half coefficient was range from 0.526-0.818. Test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.858. Spearman's correlation coefficient in each dimension >0.7.Eight common factors were got by principal component analysis. cumulative variance proportion was 57.209%, which was consistent with theory construction. Each dimension correlated significantly with total scale (P<0.01)

CONCLUSIONS: Questionnaire about tobacco control has an acceptable reliability and validity in the nursing students, it could be available to the research about the nursing students’ tobacco control.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: To provide evidence for the nursing students’ tobacco control knowledge, beliefs and practices exploration
