PURPOSE: To investigate the nursing students’ in the future nursing work, and provide evidence for developing tobacco control education in the nursing students

METHODS: With cluster sampling method, 5210 nursing students in two medical universities in Chongqing city filled in questionnaires

RESULTS: The rate that nursing students were willing to take the initiative to ask the smoking status of patients or community service objects was 81.3%. Single factor analysis showed that the factors impacting the nursing students’ behavior of the initiative to ask nursing objects's smoking status were age, grade, degree, parental smoking, attitude and environment of tobacco control, participation in tobacco control (P<0.05). Multiple factors regression analysis revealed that the responders with bachelor degree, nonsmoking parents, intentions of participating tobacco control, eyes keeping on information of tobacco control, recent exchanges on dangers of tobacco, the experiences of advising smokers to quit smoking or discouraging smoking in public places tended to take the initiative to ask others’ smoking status in the future work (P<0.05)

CONCLUSIONS: The nursing students’ intention for tobacco control is affected by a number of factors, pointed tobacco control educational practice should be taken to develop their social responsibility and practical ability of tobacco control participation

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: To provide evidence for developing tobacco control education in the nursing students
