The doctor enters me
part by part
into her laptop
as if to crack
the code of who I am.
–Minus one appendix,
that vestigial structure
a mystery
anyway.
–Plus four scars.
I earned them
anyway.
–Minus fifty skipped
heart beats an hour.
Who would miss them
anyway.
–Plus one frozen
shoulder.
Who uses it
anyway.
–Minus one thyroid.
It had cancer
anyway.
–Plus a page
of aches and pains.
I’m used to them
anyway.
–Minus sundry lumps
and bumps.
They were good
for nothing
anyway.
I think we have it all,
she says. Would you
like a printout?
