PURPOSE: About 25% of U.S. adults report insufficient sleep at least 15 out of every 30 days (MMWR 2009;58:1175-9). The rate of crashes involving drowsy drivers is about 2.4 per 100 million miles (healthypeople.gov). Lack of general sleep knowledge among community may be a key factor in maintaining this unhealthy trend. Some studies have tried to look at deficits in sleep knowledge among practitioners but there is paucity of data on general sleep knowledge of local community. We analyzed data that became available to us as a result of a community education initiative to assess the sleep knowledge of employees of healthcare facilities.
METHODS: As part of the “National Sleep Awareness Week” activities, all employees at two health care facilities (a teaching hospital in RI and a private outpatient multispecialty group in MA) were invited to fill out a Sleep IQ quiz which included 15 true/false questions. Correct responses % for each question were compared between two facilities.
RESULTS: There were 52 responses at the teaching hospital (estimated 1200 employees) and 77 responses at private group (800 employees). As there was no significant difference in no. of correct responses to each question between two facilities, total scores are presented, No. of employees responding correctly for following questions were : Brain is not resting during sleep - 66%, You can learn to function normally with 1-2 fewer hours of sleep a night - 72%, Sleep is not important in determining happiness - 95%, Problems such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension are unrelated to sleep - 82%, Older people need fewer hours of sleep - 77%, Boredom causes sleepiness even after enough sleep - 29%, Non-disruptive snoring is not harmful - 91%, Teens who fall asleep in class are lazy - 85%, Human body adjusts to night shift work after many years - 53%, Sleep disorders are mainly due to psychological problems - 77%, It is only important to maintain a regular sleep schedule on weekdays - 79%, Caffeine cannot be a countermeasure to fall-asleep crash - 48%, Most people don’t know when they are sleepy - 47%, Most peaple dream every night - 60%, A sleep deprived driver is safer than a drunk driver - 80%.
CONCLUSIONS: There is a large gap in general sleep knowledge of the local community
CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Lowest scores were seen for questions assessing self awareness of sleepiness which can be a significant barrier to reducing fatigue related accidents. More public education about sleep is needed.
