PURPOSE: To describe Clinical and Epidemiologic Profile of HIV/AIDS Patients Enrolled and Admitted at WVMC

METHODS: Data were collected from the records of all HIV/AIDS patients who were enrolled, admitted, sought consult and had follow up at WVMC HACT from March 2006 to August 2012

RESULTS: There were 125 HIV positive cases identified and/or managed at the WVMC HACT in the past 6 years. majority are males comprising (88%). forty nine percent belonged to the 19-49 age group, the economically productive. Heterosexual intercourse is the most common mode of transmission. Majority was already symptomatic on initial consult with tuberculosis being the most common condition. More than half were already in the AIDS status and 6% have already died from AIDS related complications. Of the 125 cases , 3 were lost to follow up. 2 were transferred out to other treatment hubs. Case fatality rate was 7.2%. Ninety three (74%) were on ARV therapy with good compliance and 23 (18%) were still not on ARV therapy

CONCLUSIONS: Since the inception of the WVMC HACT in 2006 no study was done on the clinical experience in HIV/AIDS positive cases in the institution ,thus ,results gathered can serve as baseline data for future studies.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Information generated from this study can be used as basis for prospective studies on HIV/AIDS
