PRESENTED ON: Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 01:30 PM - 02:30 PM
PURPOSE: The target of the survey is to know the prevalence of asthma among adults and their risk factors in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
METHODS: We were carried out questionnaire interview and spirometry tests of CRD in Ulaanbaatar from June to July 2009. Ten family clinics were selected randomly which were 5 family clinics are in center of city and other 5 clinics have been selected outside of the city. Total of approximately 1200 adults 20 years and over are planned to be randomly selected, being half of them male or female, and half of them 20-39 years or 40 years and over.
RESULTS: Total number of the adult survey subjects, 20 and over, was 1203 (607 male and 596 female). Prevalence of current asthma was around 15% [95% CI, 13.5-17.6], while the prevalence of diagnosed asthma was around 5% [95% CI, 3.6-6.0]. There was no statistical difference between male and female. We were made comparison of prevalence of current asthma in subjects with and without allergic rhinitis. 28.4% of subjects with allergic rhinitis has current asthma, while 11.6% of subjects without allergic rhinitis has asthma (P<0.01).
CONCLUSIONS: The low prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma suggests that asthma continues to be underdiagnosed and consequently undertreated.
CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Prevention
