The patient was treated with oxygen, diuretics, corticosteroids, and pleural drainage. Interferon-α (Hoffman-La Roche Inc) (interferon α-2a, 3MUI, three times a week) treatment was also initiated. After 6 weeks, her general state had greatly improved, and she was able to walk without oxygen. Anasarca had almost completely disappeared. Fourteen months after the beginning of interferon-α therapy, in a context of recent suspension of her treatment (because of poor tolerance) and corticosteroid decrease, she was again hospitalized in our ICU. Physical examination showed fever, deterioration of general status, important signs of right-sided heart insufficiency, and respiratory failure. Suspecting a pulmonary infection and an ECD outbreak, she was treated with antibiotics, a high dose of corticosteroids, oxygen, and diuretics, but the situation deteriorated further, and the patient died of shock and multiorgan failure 2 days later.
