A 5-YEAR, FOLLOW-UP STUDY OF REVISED NATIONAL TUBERCULOSIS CONTROL PROGRAMME (RNTCP) IN LUCKNOW FREE TO VIEW

Abstract

PURPOSE: To assess the status of patients after 5 years of followup, registered under RNTCP, between October 1998 to October 1999 at DOTS Centre, Unit C-9 King George Medical University, Lucknow.

METHODS: All the 208, registered patients of Tuberculosis were followed-up door to door, in their houses, with the help of RNTCP health visitor and were evaluated for their symptoms and radiological status. Those who were symptomatic were further evaluated by sputum smear for Acid Fast Bacilli on three occasions.

RESULTS: Out of 208 patients, 80 (38.14%) patients were traced after 5 years. Follow up status after 5 years revealed that 73 patients (91.25%) were asymptomatic, two patients relapsed (2.5%) and 5 (6.25%) patients died.

CONCLUSION: Five year follow-up status of patients who received treatment in RNTCP revealed that 91.25% were asymptomatic and 2.5% relapsed and 6.25% died.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Treatment under RNTCP is Effective.
