Abstract

PURPOSE: Health Related Quality of Life (HRQL) in sarcoidosis patients was evaluated using the first disease specific quality of life questionnaire - Sarcoidosis Health Questionnaire. (SHQ).

METHODS: 200 patients (pts) with biopsy positive sarcoidosis were analyzed (48 male: 153 female); the mean age of 46, 31. 173pts (86,1 %) were non-smokers. According to the stage of the lung disease five groups were analyzed: patients with stage 0 of the lung disease: 3, 5%, stage I of the lung disease: 48,3%, stage II of the lung disease 38,2 %, stage III of the lung disease 7,0 % and stage IV of the lung disease 3,0 %.Extra pulmonary disease ( different organs involvement ) had 104 patients. (52 %) SHQ scores were calculated by PC Excel calculator, original designed for SHQ, with author's permission. All analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Science version10 (SPSS 10).A probability value of p< 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.Patients with comorbidity were excluded from this study.

RESULTS: Patients with extra pulmonary sarcoidosis have statistically significant low Physical scoreP< 0,01 comparing to patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis. No statistical significance was found between the SHQ scores, and the stage of the lung disease.

CONCLUSION: The first sarcoidosis specific questionnaire- SHQ shows perfect correlations with the clinical course in patients with sarcoidosis.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: SHQ is highly recomended as the HRQOL instrument in patients with sarcoidosis.
