When, in 1983, C. Sullivan and coworkers1 devised continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnea, this was a rather confidential disease attracting the attention of a handful of physicians. In 25 years, the disease has taken epidemic proportions, sleep medicine has become established and requires thousands of personnel worldwide, and provision of CPAP machines has become a flourishing industry.
