The World Health Organization, in a position paper on allergen immunotherapy for allergic respiratory disease, stated that subcutaneous administration of allergen extract (SCIT) with a dose regimen of increasing amounts of specific allergen is an effective treatment for IgE-mediated allergic respiratory disorders.1 Peripheral T-cell tolerance is an important and possibly essential role in subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT). During SCIT, the number of peripheral blood T-cells producing interleukin (IL)-10 in response to allergen stimulation increases. T-regulatory cells that release IL-10 suppress allergen-specific T-cell responses.2
