There are large variations in the quality of health-care delivery, resulting in important differences in patient outcomes and cost. Regulatory agencies and payers are using several methods in an attempt to improve the overall quality of medical care and drive down costs. These include incentives for achieving benchmarks in processes, outcomes, or health-care structure (ie, use of electronic health records); penalties for quality defined as poor; and public reporting of health-care quality metrics.
