When the well-wishers go, he comes
to my room in his face mask
full of gratitude, my big brother,
and we talk as we haven't in years
among the bags, tubes, and poles
of our bedside existence.
They left us once, our parents,
and he put on the classical record
from the red boxed set
with the gold lettering. We danced
around the turntable in our footed sleepers,
making the room dizzy, the furniture
blurring so we left this world
and were free to sweep through
carpetless space, bits of destiny, joy into joy,
like the vision I had, waking out of surgery,
of the two lights merging, our arms
holding everything there is.

Acknowledgments

Mr. Waring works at the New England Journal of Medicine. Of his poem he writes: “I gave my older brother a kidney. Twenty years of diabetes had worn out his renal system. He still had four boys to raise. I wrote this poem to say, as Emerson does, ‘A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.’ Of course, the real hero is my brother.”
