PURPOSE: to determine the prevalence of asthma among elderly patient in a community using a simple tool such as portable PFT.

METHODS: Subjects were from a roster of elderly population in a community. There were a total of 565 senior citizen that was screened. Those who are eligible , were given a consent form and a thorough history and PE done. There were about 320 patients that are eligible, a portable spirometry was done. A diagnosis of asthma was made after according to the ATS criteria. There were 105 patient confirmed with a diagnosis of asthma which shows a 12% reversibility from the baseline 15 minutes after the use of salbutamol. SGRQ was given and filled up by the subjects to assess the respiratory status and health related quality of life .

RESULTS: Found that the prevalence of asthma is 28 %. The mean age of the subjects diagnosed to have asthma was 68 yearS. Approximately 5.6% were obesed . Females contributes to 42% of all asthmatics. The prevalence was highest among with farm related occupationas their longest held jobs, about 65% of these are asthmatics. The majority with asthma had a worse physical health related quality of life showed by SGRQ, as determined by low scores on physical component part . Exposure to Enviromental hazards the use of biofuel mass accounts to 80% with asthma, while pet ownership showed a 76% with a significant correlation between asthma. Respiratory illness particularly with pneumonia had a strong predictor of asthma which accounts to about 87% . A significant positive association between asthma and family history of asthma .

CONCLUSION: conclude that asthma had a high prevalence among elderly patient and that a simple PFT can help clinician diagnose asthma to distinguish between other diseases especially COPD.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: to be able to use simple portable PFT to diagnose asthma among elderly that were often misdiagnosed and left untreated in the community.
