Error in Text: In the article entitled, “Pulmonary/Critical Care Physicians and Hospice Patients: Billing Specialty Care for Patients Enrolled in a Hospice Program,” published in the June 2010 issue of CHEST (2010; 137[6]:1427-1431), there was an error in the information shown on page 1430. The first sentence of the third paragraph in the “Attending Physician” section, which reads “For physicians who submit claims electronically, an HC modifier must be appended to the CPT code,” is inaccurate.

Attending physicians not employed or contracted by hospice may directly bill Medicare and other payers for their visits and the professional component of diagnostic tests using the GV modifier, not the HC modifier cited in the article text. Consulting physicians providing care unrelated to the terminal illness do not bill the hospice, but rather submit their claims directly to Medicare and other payers using the GW modifier.
