Dr Alan Jay Block died on December 5, 2009. As friends and colleagues, we remember Jay as a legend, and we celebrate his legacy. Dr Block, best known as Jay, excelled in many important and influential roles in his life: husband, father, grandfather, brother, clinician, educator, researcher, editor, mentor, lecturer, and entertainer. After Jay completed his training at Johns Hopkins in 1964, he stayed on as faculty until moving to Gainesville, Florida, in 1970 to become the Division Head of Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Florida. At the University of Florida, Jay recruited a number of stellar individuals and developed a highly regarded pulmonary division.
