The matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family of proteins comprises >25 enzymes that cleave different components of extracellular matrix (ECM). Their expression is ubiquitous, attesting to their teleologic importance in regulating physiologic remodeling, as exemplified in the endometrium during menstruation1 or during normal wound healing, where epithelial cell migration and survival as well as wound contracture are modulated.23
