Treatment decisions involve a trade-off between likely benefits on the one hand, and risks and costs on the other. The Consensus Conference on Antithrombotic Therapy of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) has developed guidelines to help clinicians make treatment decisions for average patients. To integrate these recommendations with their own clinical judgment, clinicians need to understand the basis for the clinical recommendations that experts offer them. A systematic approach to grading the strength of treatment recommendations can minimize bias and aid interpretation.
