A 40 -year-old African-American man with a history of drug abuse and depression was admitted after having ingested boric acid powder in an attempted suicide. He was closely observed in the medical ICU, and his vital signs and general condition were stable. Two days later, he complained of shortness of breath. He stated he had injected his IV line with a chemical substance that he had procured by his bedside and had swallowed some of it as well. His motive was to end his life.
