To the Editor:

I agree with both the article by Lok and colleagues1and its accompanying editorial, “In Defense of the Stethoscope,”2 published in CHEST (November 1998). Here is my humorous reaction to the pitiful state of stethoscope use in US medicine today.

The Stethoscope

It used to be for many a generation to bring diagnosis to gestation we employed the stethoscope, you see? Cardiac sounds with gallops, murmurs, thrills or breathing noises in rebounds and belly gurgles without frills, this friendly gadget brought corporeal happenings to ear, we always thought diagnostically clear. Nowadays with MRIs and CATs the “dinosaur” around our neck is headed for oblivion, rats the art of healing is a wreck.
